July 2, 2011Converting photoshop files or psd to wordpress is a very common process. Many designers are more comfortable with mousing around then writing css code or slicing psd layouts. I’ll argue that the ability to create custom wordpress templates from psd is a vital skill in this age of the wordpress CMS. There seem to be many conversion shops/web services out there. I’ve found prices that range from low 100′s for a multiple page psd to wordpress service.
Psd to wordpress – the process
- In photoshop/illustrator – design with css2 and css3 properties in mind
- Use a grid and correct typographic scale for headings and body text
- Make notes of all the hex values of the colors and gradients stops
- strip away all un-needed graphics by cropping and reducing photography iluustrations to their essense
- use sliding door techniques for image rollovers
- use sprite sheets for common user interface elements
- grab repeating sections for background tiling of div or dom elements
This list is really a small sampling of the steps involved in the psd to wordpress conversion process. In future articles I will illustrate the specific breakdowns in detail via a case study.
Psd to wordpress – semantic markup design
Web pages are a combination of markup or information describing the document and the actual content itself with a healthy dose of syndicated content (ads, widgets and other modular media). Hypermedia relies on documents linking to each other and for the system to work well the documents need to be formed in a standard way for machines to decode, this is semantic markup. This concept took me a while to understand but its critical to understand that the internet is a PAGE based network, and that individual items on the page use specific markup that describes the essence of what that content is.
Markup is evolving and semantic units are expanding every year, recently a new initiative to further this aim was introduced via schema.org coalition. There are now standards in place that help describe creative content like movies, music, engineering documents. Other semantic units like location based data and proximity is key for mobile supercomputers (iphone 5 & ipad 3) these devices now harness multicore gpu units that are smoking fast and we need to describe the world in these new semantic units.
Are we describing a train station route? Perhaps we’re engaged in mood tracking analysis and commentary? Maybe we’re reading a recipe and drilling down in the steps of the baking process. The idea, the problem or the goal of the vistor is the 1st step then comes the semantic markup design and finally the visual design which is further expanded upon by the psd to wordpress step.
Psd to wordpress is simply the end of the cycle of really considering what the document is.
